I was sort of half watching ET since I was folding laundry in the family room, and they had a story about beauty pageants for little girls. ' OMG, it is so sick!!! These little girls, babies and up, are all wearing heavy makeup, fake teeth, etc.. Even the babies were wearing lipstick, mascara, eye makeup!!! Why oh why do we allow this?? What is wrong with these mothers?? I feel like they should all be reported to social services.

::ducks:: I've been applying mascara, lipstick and blush to dance girl since she was 4. I discovered false eye lashes around the age of 7 - greatly curbed the massive meltdowns. Anyway - at 8 we had to start with eyeliner and the deep smokey eye browns instead bright light blue for the stage. Just for recital and competitions. I'm with you though - I don't like pageants, except for the natural ones that require a real talent/academic achievement and actually give out scholarship money. Miss America for the win against Miss USA any day. Ooh and the creepiest aspect is those scary glamour photos that they do.

My niece was very in to dance when she was young, and they did makeup for the recitals. But they did not look like these babies in the beauty pageants. The pageants are trying to make these little girls in to sexual beings in so far as their appearance is concerned. And, I wonder at the motivations, especially since we seem to have so many pedophiles out there. It just bothers me. I can't imagine encouraging my child to do that. Those glam photos are scary, you're right. It's sad, imo.

Your daughter was adorable! And, she doesn't look nearly as made up as the girls I saw. And I bet she wasn't wearing fake teeth. ;D
My son started in amateur theater when he was 5, and we put the makeup on him too. That didn't bother me, lol. Probably because it was theatre, as dance is theatre. The pageants are not focused on talent primarily.
I think what bothers me is the focus on the appearance of the girls. I always felt that the only thing I had to offer was my appearance, or at least the most important thing. That is not a good way to feel. I hate to see that happening to these girls.

I remember that one show that was on Bravo years ago - but I know they have newer versions of the same thing on MTV et al. It's hard to watch the moms be so mean, manipulative and just plain nasty to the girls.
Up until she was 8 we had to do the curly hair - half up half down - the girl has stick straight hair - it took 75 blue sponge rollers set Thursday night full of Dep to have curls by Saturday morning for recital rehearsal. Usually they'd then have the recital that night and again on Sunday - so a nice curler cap would usually hold it to Sunday night. But OMG try to do that to a child with sensory issues and sometimes three weeks in a row - or twice and then two weeks at Christmas!!!
I was SOOOO happy when she turned 8 and was considered to be a "big girl" and we graduated to buns!

Thanks, we think she was adorable too! The sexy thing, that's something that I am really skeeved out about from what I've seen of the pageant stuff, but lemme tell ya chile, it goes on in the competitive dance world as well - way too many little ones dressed inappropriately, dancing with inappropriate moves to inappropriate lyrics. Yeah, 9 yr olds dancing to Mein Heir in bustiers!
