I got shingles when I was 14, and my husband got it at 31. Both of us had chickenpox as children, and the vaccine wasn't yet common when we got our shingles. Both of our cases were mild, and I suspect part of the rise in shingles in the young is just that they were underreported before. I could have mistaken the rash for something else and not connected the sore muscle as a symptom. My father had a horrible case that made him sick for six months. It was awful.
That's interesting about the vaccine, though. I was hoping regular vaccination would mean adults wouldn't have shingles. Bummer if the reverse is true.

Oh, and I suspect it will not make it through mod, since three or four of mine haven't yet, so:
This comment is pending approval and won't be displayed until it is approved.
I missed the citations to peer-reviewed journal articles in the bibliography. He must have left that part off, but I did catch the carefully worded dance around one California study which concluded:
"Conclusions: Autism incidence in California shows no sign yet of plateauing. Younger ages at diagnosis, differential migration, changes in diagnostic criteria, and inclusion of milder cases do not fully explain the observed increases. Other artifacts have yet to be quantified, and as a result, the extent to which the continued rise represents a true increase in the occurrence of autism remains unclear."http://journals.lww.com/epidem/pages/articleviewer.aspx?year=2009&issue=01000&article=00016&type=abstract
Hmm, evidence of a true increase remains unclear, but all he included was the first bit about widening diagnostic criteria not accounting for all of it.
I also caught lots of references to personal opinion, an admission that he's just a layperson, and many amusing anecdotes. But full of evidence? Notsomuch.

All my posts citing specific examples of crazy from whale.to have been deleted, whether they used quotes or not. Dugmaze has long paragraphs cut and paste, so I'm not sure why either quotes or links to specific articles would be off limits. Chalk it up to arbitrary moderation. Wee!

Ari Ne'man posted? Yay! I guess that was what he was referring to over on LBRB when he said something about anti-vaxxers possibly being "useful."

Yeah, I saw a presentation from a developmental ped last year from a university program that does autism research. She said their recommendation now is to send any child who is not talking at 18 months for autism screening. She said it's darn hard to catch autism in 18 month olds, too, but she'd rather get it wrong a few times than miss a chance for early intervention.
